How the performance is calculated

Each holding is measured from the date the model added it, indexed to 100 on that day. Listed funds and shares use daily closing prices adjusted for distributions, so income is counted as reinvested; private funds use their published monthly net asset values. A holding the model has sold is measured to the day it left.

The portfolio starts at 100 on the model's start date and holds the weights listed for each period. It is rebalanced back to those weights at the end of every month and whenever a holding is added, sold or re-weighted. Any weight not yet invested in a holding is counted as cash earning nothing. A private fund's latest value is used for at most 45 days, so a late report cannot stretch the line.

Fees. Each fund's own fees are already inside its prices. The portfolio's line and returns are shown after Maple Groove's advisory fee of 0.70% a year, the fee on every discretionary model portfolio, taken out as it accrues; they are tracked before it as well. Each holding's own figures and the benchmarks carry no advisory fee. Fees on other accounts are set out on the investment fees page.

Currency. Every figure is in Canadian dollars. A holding that trades in US dollars is converted at each day's exchange rate, so its returns include the move in the US dollar as well as the move in the holding.

Benchmarks. The S&P 500 (through the SPY fund, converted to Canadian dollars the same way) and the TSX 60 (through the XIU fund), both with distributions reinvested, are measured over exactly the same dates as the line beside them. Returns longer than a year are annualized.

The information on this page is provided for information only and is not an offer to sell or a solicitation to buy any security. Model weights are targets and individual accounts will differ with timing, cash flows, fees and suitability. Performance figures are calculated as described above and do not reflect any particular client account. All investments involve risk, including the possible loss of principal, and private funds carry additional risks including illiquidity. Past performance is not indicative of future results.
